The state information agency TDH reports that the state-run communications operator “Turkmentelecom” is scheduled to provide the participants and visitors to the Asian Games “Ashgabat-2017” with high quality state-of-the-art Internet services, local telephone connection, television broadcasting and Wifi access for which all required equipment has been installed.
Some athletes have already posted reports in the social network Facebook, which is blocked for ordinary residents of Turkmenistan. Access to other popular social networks (VK, odnoklassniki etc), messengers (whatsapp, telegram, viber and others) as well as websites publishing criticism towards the country’s authorities (including “Chronicles of Turkmenistan”) are either inaccessible or restricted.
The Internet access in Turkmenistan is one of the slowest and most expensive in the world.
