Turkmenistan’s state television and several pro-governmental media outlets deny a shortage of flour and bread in the country in their broadcasts or reports.
According to journalists, there is an abundance of bread and bakery products at the counters of Turkmen stores and no restrictions on the sale of bread and flour have been imposed.
It should be highlighted that this is how the official media outlets usually respond to all reports about deficit of certain food products.
For instance, if there is a shortage of eggs, the television demonstrates poultry farms and store counters filled exclusively with eggs and when the country experiences a deficit of oil, TV channels demonstrate oilseed processing facilities and stores featuring counters full of oil.
Let us recall that since the start of the year Turkmenistan’s northern province has been experiencing an acute shortage of flour and bread. “Chronicles of Turkmenistan” has previously reported that the restriction of one sack per household a month was introduced in Dashoguz. Moreover, residence registration and, according to Radio “Azatlyk”, a certificate proving that gas and water meters have been installed in the apartment need to be presented.
